København was kind. My friend and I played the modern version of "pick a place on a spinning globe". We looked up the cheapest flights to Europe on Google Flights. First, it was Prague. Then we thought about South America for a bit. And then finally, Copenhagen. Our airbnb was by a small lake Sortedams Sø, there were swans and an occasional old man with an accordion. Every morning we set out on an adventure but ate breakfast at the same place. The sun greeted us once out of the 4 days there but overall, København was kind. I follow the motto ~travel like a local. An oxymoron. I wanted to see things tourists don't. So I dragged my friend to Freetown Christiania, Christianshavn. An autonomous town created after the military left its base there, some say it was created as protest against the Dansk government. You're not allowed to photograph inside the town but here's what you'll see: art, free spirits and lots of cannabis. The area is subject to frequent police raids but the determination of the people to remain as they are defeat all else. A small sign read "Green Light District." The walls were spray painted with graffiti, more colors than all of Nyhavn, it was an artist's dream. And the highlight of my trip, stumbling across this faraway town distant from Tivoli and its bright lights. A safe haven.
